Death Note

Now, I've already done a review for the Netflix adaptation of Death Note, but for those who haven't seen the show, I should say that I highly recommend it for a number of reasons.

  1. Great characters
  2. Amazing animations
  3. Great dub
  4. Realistic emotions
  5. Beautiful OST
For those of you who don't know what it's about, or have never heard of it before, Death Note follows a young college student by the name of Light Yagami who obtains a notebook with the power to kill people. On the other side, the world's most famous detective, L, is determined to track down this Light, who's known around the world as 'Kira'. Throughout the course of the show, Light and the original owner of the note, a God of Death named Ryuk, work to outsmart L so that Kira can become God, until Light realizes that there's another notebook being used.

Now, that's just a choppy summary of the anime. If you want to know more about it, here's an amazing fanmade trailer.

Along with it's thrilling plot line, this psychological thriller brings you close to each of the characters until you've found yourself emotionally attached to them. However, there are some characters that you either really hate, or really love. With Death Note being one of my first anime, I was automatically drawn to its animation and the supernatural aspect.
From episode one, you're drawn into the show with Light's distorted sense of justice and Ryuk's sense of boredom in his world.

As the show progresses, the character designs grow, as the characters grow on you, as well.

The contrasts between the two main characters brings the exciting conflicts into the show, but their shared traits, such as their intelligence and their determination, along with their confidence in themselves brings out a darker, more thrilling side to the show as the two fight to outsmart each other in an epic game of cat and mouse.

The soundtrack of any show is what draws the audience in, the most. Will it do its job, bringing them to tears or cause the death scene to look like a joke? In Death Note, the OST is beautifully chosen and wonderfully crafted, fitting to each scene and drawing the fans in.
Yikes, this is sounding like some sort of poetry shit, and that's not what I'm aiming for.
The OST is thrilling, dark, and for me, it's very fitting to the show, itself.
However, in contrast to the dark and psychological themes, there's the occasional lighter sense of humor mixed in with some of the characters. Despite the darker, more morbid themes, the anime surfaces many powerful themes as well. Trust. Loyalty. Family. Love.

Maybe that all sounds cheesy, but isn't that what makes a good show?

The anime also hosts some of the best conflicts between characters, and not just physical conflict. The conflict between Light and L remains a thrilling battle of wits and the beautiful animation causes for some great physical conflicts between the two.

The constant cat-and-mouse chase takes on a whole new meaning as L and Light must attempt to find each other out, without knowing each other's true name or face. The first one discovered - loses.

It's truly one of the best supernatural/psychological  thrillers I've ever seen. From it's great dub to the soundtrack and animation. I highly recommend this anime to anyone looking for a good thriller to watch. It's worth every second of each episode, hosting a mystery that keeps everyone guessing.

Who will be discovered and eliminated first?
